Where We Come From
In 2001, Myra Krien of Pomegranate Studios in Santa Fe, New Mexico established an organization named S.E.E.D.s (Self-esteem, Empowerment and Education through Dance). Rachel Shelton was one of the first graduates of this belly dance program in 2002, and Sofia Onstad followed close behind in 2003. In 2007, Sofia was certified as a S.E.E.D.s instructor, and she founded a sister branch at Euphoria Studios in Portland, Oregon called S.E.E.D.s of Euphoria (now Marissa Mission).
S.E.E.D.s' mission is, "To mentor young women in order to create healthy and strong individuals who are socially and fiscally responsible to themselves and their community. This is accomplished through the vehicle of dance, specifically American Tribal Style (ATS) belly dance, talking circles, journal writing and presentations." Myra still offers annual certifications to teach S.E.E.D.s classes, and her ongoing program in Santa Fe continues to flourish.
In the Summer of 2011, the Portland branch, S.E.E.D.s of Euphoria shifted our focus to honor the memory of Marissa Mathy-Zvaifler and all she and her untimely death stood for. Through this new transition, we have added and yogic practices to our curriculum, with plans to include self-defense training.
