I.T.S. Belly Dance
Improvisational Tribal Style (ITS) is a unique tradition of belly dance, most often performed in a group, executed by a structured system of leading and following. Through cues and transitions, the troupe moves in unison, intuitively following the leader’s movements. After a group of dancers have performed with one another for some time, the transitions between movements become cohesive, the strong bond between performers dissolving separation and ego; no one person holds the lead for long, no individual dominates, and the group flows in dynamic stability. ITS encourages change and diversity in a nurturing community.

Belly dance offers many benefits. It celebrates and accents the natural form of the feminine body, complimenting every figure. The Marissa Mission is sensitive to issues of sexuality in dance. We believe body awareness and sensuality are natural and healthy; improvising within the tribal tradition provides support and guidance needed at the critical stage when children transform into adults. Should they feel guilty or self-conscious about their changing forms? Or should they be encouraged to responsibly embrace their physicality? ITS belly dance is the perfect outlet to connect with our bodies and express ourselves.

Many ITS movements are inspired by ancient dance moves from across the Roma Gypsy trail and the Middle East. Some are earthy, heavy and grounding; others are graceful, light and airy. Some movements symbolize birth, others the infinity of the universe. Through dance, we connect with our ancestors and each other, learn to accept our varied figures, and create a safe and supportive approach to explore new-found sensuality.
